🕒 Lifetime Warranty vs. Limited Warranty: What’s the Difference?

Don’t Be Fooled by the Fine Print — Here’s What Really Matters

We get this question a lot:

My tool says it has a lifetime warranty — so why isn’t the repair covered?

The answer usually comes down to this: not all warranties are created equal.

Let’s break down the difference between lifetime and limited warranties, how they apply to your tools, and what you can do to stay covered.

🛠️ What Is a Lifetime Warranty?

Sounds great, right? “Lifetime” implies forever — but it depends on who’s lifetime we’re talking about.

Here’s how most manufacturers define it:

✅ Coverage applies for the expected life of the tool — not your life

✅ It only covers defects in materials or workmanship

✅ It doesn’t cover wear and tear, damage, or misuse

✅ It often requires registration within 30–90 days of purchase

🔎 RIDGID offers a Lifetime Service Agreement — but only if you register within 90 days and provide proof of purchase. Otherwise, the tool defaults to a 3-year warranty.

🛠️ What Is a Limited Warranty?

This is the most common type of warranty you’ll see. It’s more straightforward — but shorter.

Here’s what it usually means:

🗓️ Coverage lasts 1 to 5 years, depending on the brand and tool type

✅ Covers defective parts or workmanship

❌ Doesn’t cover consumables, wear, or accidental damage

✅ Often accepted with just a receipt — no registration needed

Examples:

  • Milwaukee: 1–5 years depending on tool type

  • Makita: 1-3 year standard depending on category

  • DeWALT: 1–3 years depending on category

  • RYOBI: 3 years standard (receipt recommended)

❗ What Neither Warranty Covers

Whether it says “limited” or “lifetime,” most warranties will NOT cover:

🔧 Normal wear and tear (brushes, bearings, O-rings, etc.)

💥 Damage from misuse, overuse, or improper storage

💧 Water damage

🔩 Missing serial numbers or altered tools

🧰 Unauthorized repairs or aftermarket parts

This is why we always start with a free assessment — to figure out the real cause of the failure before starting any repair or claim.
